South Bay Kids perform all over California. We perform at several county fairs each summer, including Alameda, Monterey, San Mateo, Solano, Ventura and Orange. We also perform at the State Fair in Sacramento. In between the Fair shows, we perform at several Church, School and City Festivals including our own MILPITAS INTERNATIONAL BBQ and FESTIVAL as well as numerous shows at the Alameda County Fair.. Our vocal troupe also does a series of special Holiday Shows between the Thanksgiving Day weekend and Christmas. This summer our touring show is booked to play Disneyland and Orange County Fair in late July in addition to the Ventura County Fair. We are looking to return to the California State Fair.
There are two main sections of South Bay Kids. The first one is for vocalists. The main performing troupe is called the Variety Show Singers. The singers learn several different styles of music and perform using background tracks. Some of the singers accompany themselves on guitar, ukelele or piano.Vocal technique, stage presence, as well as microphone technique, is taught, so prior performance experience is not required. The technical methods used are a hybrid of those used by popular singers and are very voice friendly, even for the youngest singer.
The major section of South Bay Kids is the Studio Band Project. Each band has its own style. Most new bands start by various styles of popular music that appeals to pre teens and teens. This music tends to be easier to learn and a wonderful way to introduce students to the skills needed to play in a band. We have bands that play punk, classic rock, oldies, ska, swing, funk, soul, disco, etc. It is important that we have bands that play different styles of music, especially with all of the different venues where we perform.
There are two other performing groups. UNPLUGGED is a group that use for performances where volume may be an issue. It is also a chance for the members to use live instruments (acoustic guitar, piano, ukelele, etc.) to accompany themselves or other members. Members of this group are from Variety Show Singers and Studio Band.
The biggest group, as well as being the most popular, is our touring show. We have been performing a show called GET READY since 2003. This is a unique show and it combines many members of Variety Show (usually 7 to 10 main vocalists) and a rotating back up band made up of members from the various Studio Bands. This band also includes a horn section and a percussion section. We have between 10 to 15 musicians which rotate during the show. The show, itself, features the classic Soul music of the 60s' and early 70's. This is a rather large production and we can only perform it on the larger stages. It is a fun show and the members enjoy it, immensely. This is the show that performs in SoCal, including shows at Disneyland. Depending on the number of members who want to join, there might need to be an audition process, but I try to accommodate as many qualified performers as I can.
Tuition for South Bay Kids is $400 per year. A member can be in multiple groups for no additional fee. Payments can be arranged
